The Church of Scotland, often simply called the Kirk, is Scotland's national church and follows Presbyterian governance through elected elders. It dates from the Scottish Reformation of 1560 and keeps a presence in parishes from the Borders to the islands. Membership stands at around 250,000, though many more Scots retain a link with their parish church.
